Hydrostatic Testing Requirements

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the hydrostatic test requirements for different types of fire extinguishers vary. NFPA 10: Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers provides the following guidelines for hydrostatic testing:

  • Pressurized water extinguishers (such as water and foam extinguishers) must be hydrostatically tested every 5 years.

  • Carbon dioxide extinguishers must be hydrostatically tested every 5 years or every 10 years if the manufacturer's instructions allow it.

  • Dry chemical extinguishers must be hydrostatically tested every 12 years.

  • Wet chemical extinguishers must be hydrostatically tested every 5 years.

  • Class D extinguishers must be hydrostatically tested every 12 years.

  • Cartridge-operated dry chemical extinguishers must be hydrostatically tested every 12 years (chemical cylinder) or every 5 years (pressure cylinder) if the manufacturer's instructions allow it.

  • A 6 year maintenance is required if the cylinder requires a 12 year hydrostatic test.

Suppression Inspections

State and local authorities and the fire protection manufacturers typically require that fire suppression systems are tested by a fire suppression specialist once a year. This includes Water Flow Tests, alarm tests, fire pump tests, and where applicable, and antifreeze concentration test and more.
